The Winmau Wheelchair Darts Association (WWDA, formerly Wheelchair Darts UK) has announced a new partnership with WheelPower – the national charity for wheelchair sport
in the UK. It was established in 1948 to provide, promote and develop opportunities for men, women and children with disabilities to participate in recreational and competitive wheelchair sport.
For over 50 years, the charity has provided unique opportunities for sport to be used for rehabilitation, recreation and competition and was the founding organisation for the disability sports movement which led to the Paralympic Games.
Having already included sports such as athletics, table tennis, skiing, basketball and rugby, WheelPower readily identifies the huge social and rehabilitation opportunities offered by darts.
Steve Snelling, Sports Advisor for WheelPower, said: “When Mike Skuse of the WWDA contacted us with the overwhelming reaction to the launch of wheelchair darts in the UK, it was immediately obvious to us that the sport of darts has huge potential.
“One of our main aims is to provide new and exciting opportunities for wheelchair users, and darts is such a big part of the popular culture in the UK that we know it will be an instant success with players across the country.”
Mike Skuse of the WWDA added: “The introduction of the new 137cm throwing height for wheelchair players, and the formation of the World Disability Darts Association by Russ Strobel, opened up a whole new avenue for wheelchair players across the globe. We will be working closely with Russ and his colleagues, WheelPower and Winmau to further the sport and bring new and exciting opportunities for wheelchair players in the darts arena. WheelPower are an incredibly influential and well-respected organisation and to have their full support is a huge boost for our Association”.
