Gary Anderson makes it a double at Nuland PDC Pro Tour Darts 19th June 2011

Double Dutch For Anderson!

19 Jun 2011

GARY ANDERSON completed a Dutch Darts Trophy double with a 6-3 win over Andy Smith in Sunday’s final at the Van Der Valk Hotel in Nuland, as he joined the elite group of players to win back-to-back Players Championship.

Gary Anderson and Andy Smith

The Scot had picked up the £6,000 first prize in Saturday’s event in Holland, and repeated the achievement 24 hours later, putting himself alongside Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis, Mervyn King, Robert Thornton and Wes Newton in winning both PDC ProTour events over a weekend.

He had counted himself lucky to escape a first round loss to young Dutchman Rico Dera, who led 5-2 before being clawed back by the 888.com Premier League Darts champion.

Anderson then defeated Michael Mansell, Adrian Gray and Co Stompe to erach the quarter-finals, where he mounted an even more impressive comeback against Dennis Smith.

Smith needed to defeat Anderson to win a qualifying place for the World Matchplay next month, and led 5-1 before the Scot hit back with five straight legs to take victory – landing a trio of 12-dart finishes in the process.

He then defeated Simon Whitlock in the semi-finals for a second successive day, courtesy of a 6-2 triumph, before facing in-form Smith in the decider.

Anderson took an early 2-0 lead thanks to finishes of double six and double eight before Smith hit back to level, courtesy of a 14-dart leg and a 116 finish.

Anderson, though, replied in 14 darts with a 96 checkout, and punished three missed doubles from Smith to win the sixth against the throw for a 4-2 lead.

Double four for a 15-darter saw him move 5-2 up, and although he missed a match dart as Smith landed tops to win a third leg and stay in the game, Anderson was too strong and sealed victory in 13 darts, hitting a 180 and double two for the win.

“I always seem to do well in Holland, for some reason, and it’s fantastic for me to win both events,” said Anderson. “It’s a proud moment to win both events and to be in what people call an elite group.

“I made it hard for myself at times and in my first game I missed far too many doubles in going 5-2 down, but I managed to get that back and pip him, and I did the same against Dennis Smith.

“I enjoyed the final against Andy and it’s a great way to prepare for the World Matchplay.”

Smith had won a Players Championship last weekend in Barnsley, and added a further £3,000 prize money with his display in Nuland.

He came from 4-1 down to win his semi-final with Vincent van der Voort 6-5, taking out 120 to win the deciding leg, and also defeated Colin Osborne, Per Laursen and Steve Brown during the event.

Whitlock’s run to the semi-finals saw him reach that stage for the sixth time this year, and included 6-4 wins over Steve Beaton and stable-mate James Wade in the latter stages as well as a narrow 6-5 victory against Devon Petersen.

Van der Voort also continued his impressive form this year by reaching the last four, following up Saturday’s quarter-final with a semi-final appearance before going down to Smith, although £2,000 prize money was consolation for the Dutchman.

Beaton’s run to the last eight saw him pick up £1,000 – which saw him jump into the Players Championship Order of Merit qualifying places for the World Matchplay next month, at the expense of Magnus Caris, who had occupied the final spot going into Sunday’s event.

Caris had been defeated in a showdown with Andy Hamilton in Sunday’s first round, as the former Blackpool semi-finalist was left clinging on to his spot in the World Matchplay.

Hamilton has slipped to 17th in the PDC Order of Merit, and lost 6-5 to Mensur Suljovic in the second round on Sunday to only claim £200 prize money, but when Dennis Smith’s run was agonisingly ended by Anderson the Derby-based star was able to relax.

The day also featured a nine-dart finish for Justin Pipe, the first of his professional career, meaning the blow of going on to lose 6-4 to Colin Osborne was softened by a £400 bonus as he matched Simon Whitlock’s perfect leg 24 hours earlier.

Osborne’s win was amongst four he put together in reaching a second successive quarter-final to seal his World Matchplay qualification.

Final – Leg-by-leg
Andy Smith v Gary Anderson

0-0 – Gary Anderson wins the bull and will throw first
0-1 – Anderson hits two 140s to be first to a finish, with double six giving him the opening leg in 16 darts.
0-2 - Anderson lands a 180, and both players leave 121 after nine darts, before both also missing the bullseye for the finish. Smith then misses two darts at double eight, and Anderson breaks on double eight for a 15-darter.
1-2 – Smith breaks back immediately with a 14-darter, which featured two 140s to open and double four to end the leg.
2-2 – Anderson scores 140, 100 and 180, but misses double 13 for a 12-darter and Smith levels with a fine 116 finish, ending on double 18.
2-3 – A strong leg from Anderson sees him edge back in front with a 14-dart leg, finished with a 96 checkout, as Smith leads himself on 78 after 12 darts.
2-4 – Anderson edges a potentially pivotal leg, having initially missed double 18 for a 110 finish, Smith wasted a dart at double top and two at double ten as the Scot returned to hit double one and double 17 for the leg.
2-5 - Smith opens the seventh with a 180, but Anderson is first to a finish as double four takes him a leg away from victory.
3-5 - Smith is first to a finish, but misses tops for a 120 finish to give Anderson his chance – but he is also off-target with double top for a 110 checkout as his opponent returns to hit the bed and keep the match alive.
3-6 - Anderson scores 140 and 180, followed by 105 to leave 76, and although he misses double eight and four returns to hit double two for the win in 13 darts.

Joe Cullen wins Nuland PDC Youth Tour 10 Title 18th June 2011

Cullen Claims Youth Double

18 Jun 2011

JOE CULLEN won his second PDC Unicorn Youth Tour event of 2011 with a 4-2 defeat of Holland’s Gino Vos in Saturday’s final in Nuland.

Joe Cullen and Gino Vos

Cullen followed up last month’s victory in Austria with another Continental triumph as he took the €660 first prize at the Van Der Valk Hotel.

He had whitewashed Jimmy van Schie in his opening game, and edged past Jamie Landon and Wouter Vaes before picking up a 3-0 quarter-final victory against Holland’s Ryan de Vreede.

Cullen then defeated last week’s Youth Tour winner Reece Robinson 4-2 in the semi-finals, and produced a classy display in the decider against Vos.

Cullen hit double top and double eight to break in two of the opening three legs, with Vos hitting back with a 58 finish in the second after a missed double 18 from his opponent.

Cullen finished 87 on double five for a 3-1 lead following leg four, and although Vos took out 80 to stay in the game, Cullen took out tops for a 13-dart leg in sealing the win.

Vos, from Oss in Holland, defeated fellow countryman Michael van Gerwen 4-0 in the semi-finals with an impressive display, and also defeated Dirk van Duijvenbode 3-2 in the quarter-finals on his way to a €440 prize.

Van Gerwen, a two-time Youth Tour winner this year, followed up his quarter-final appearance in Saturday’s Dutch Darts Trophy Players Championship by reaching the semi-finals in the Youth Tour event.

Van Duijvenbode and de Vreede were two of four all-Dutch losing quarter-finalists, alongside Jimmy Hendricks and Co Stompe Jnr.

The PDC Unicorn Youth Tour now takes a summer break before returning for Event 11 in Derby on September 3, which will be followed on September 17 by a further Dutch event in Nuland on September 17.

Entry is available for both events via the PDC Head Office on 08712 501 180, while players can also enter the Nuland event via www.pdc-europe.net.

Gary Anderson wins PDC Pro Tour Nuland Netherlands 18th June 2011

Anderson Takes Holland Win

18 Jun 2011

GARY ANDERSON picked up his fifth tournament victory of 2011 with a narrow 6-5 defeat of Wes Newton in Saturday’s Dutch Darts Trophy Players Championship.

gary anderson and wes newton

Gary Anderson and Wes Newton

The Scot added to his success this year, which already includes the 888.com Premier League Darts victory he claimed a month ago, by winning the £6,000 event at the Van Der Valk Hotel in Nuland, Holland.

Having swept through his first four matches by dropping just three legs in the process, seeing off Jose Luis Rodriguez, Rocco Maes, Kim Huybrechts and Mark Hylton, he was pushed hard in battling to victory.

He edged past Vincent van der Voort 6-4 in the quarter-finals and then defeated Simon Whitlock 6-5 in the semis, after the Australian missed one dart for the win in the decider.

In the final, he broke Newton’s throw immediately to take the opening leg and double ten to double his lead.

Newton, inpsired by a 101 finish, won three of the next four to level the game at three-all, before finishing double 16 at the sixth time of asking to win the seventh and take the lead.

Anderson levelled with a 100 finish which featured two double tops, but missed the bull to break in the ninth as Newton posted double ten to lead 5-4.

Anderson produced a brilliant 12-darter to level and send the game into a decider, which he opened with a 180.

Newton, though, was first to a double – only to miss darts at double 16 and double eight for victory as Anderson stepped up to finish 75 on tops and triumph.

“I’m really pleased,” said Anderson. “I was made to work hard at the back end of the day by some great performances from Vincent, Simon and Wes, so it’s a relief to come out of this the winner.”

Newton’s run to the final saw him continue a brilliant seam of form this year, coming only a fortnight after he was runner-up in the Speedy Hire UK Open and a week after he became a father for the first time.

He had opened his day with a whitewash win over Roland Kurok, before defeating Michael Mansell, Dave Chisnall, Roland Scholten, Michael van Gerwen and Mark Walsh on the day, and took home £3,000 as runner-up.

“It’s disappointing to lose a second final in two weeks, and I don’t want to become known as ‘the bridesmaid’ by losing,” said Newton. “I’m obviously pleased, though, to have done so well and everything’s going really well for me at the moment.

Whitlock’s run to the semi-final also included a nine-dart finish in the opening leg of a win over Nigel Heydon, as he hit a perfect leg for the second successive weekend.

Walsh’s semi-final appearance was his best display on the circuit since February, before he was eventually defeated by Newton.

A quarter-final run for Michael van Gerwen could prove vital for the young Dutchman in the race to secure qualification for the European Championship, while Colin Osborne reached the same stage to improve his chances of winning through to the World Matchplay.

Sunday’s Players Championship will be the final event before the qualifiers for next month’s World Matchplay are confirmed, with the provisional field for the European Championship also being announced, subject to change following the World Matchplay.

Andy “pieman” Smith wins PDC Bobby Bourne Memorial Darts Barnsley 12th June 2011

Smith’s Joy With Barnsley Win

12 Jun 2011

ANDY SMITH picked up his first victory of 2011 with a 6-2 defeat of Dave Chisnall in Sunday’s Bobby Bourn Memorial Players Championship.

Andy "The Pieman" Smith

The Studley ace continued a trend of winning Players Championships in June with a summer victory for the third successive year, as he took the £6,000 first prize for the sixth PDC ProTour win of his career.

Smith, who turns 44 on June 22, edged 6-5 wins over Wayne Atwood and James Richardson in his opening two matches, but turned on the style with defeats of Alan Tabern, Andy Hamilton, Gary Anderson and James Wade to reach the final.

Chisnall edged an early 2-1 lead, but Smith levelled with a 13-darter and broke throw with a third 180 of the final in leg five, which he took in 12 darts.

Both players hit 180s in the sixth, which Smith took in 14 darts, before a missed double top from Chisnall in the next allowed his opponent in to finish 76 on double four to lead 5-2.

Smith then hit four scores of 100 or better to be first to a finish, and he took out double top for a 13-darter in claiming victory, averaging 106.71 in the process

“I’m chuffed to bits,” said Smith, who moves up to 20th in the PDC Order of Merit after the victory.

“People don’t realise how much pressure is on players like myself who are fighting to qualify for events like the World Matchplay. We all need to do well and the pressure is immense, which is showing in how well players are playing.

“Wayne Atwood had three darts at double top to beat me, James Richardson was 5-1 up and I came back to beat him 6-5, but against Gary, James and Andy Hamilton I played really well.

“I felt I had the tougher side of the draw, but it shows I’m playing well. When I get to a final, I usually win it and that happened again, and I’m so pleased it’s got me into Blackpool.”

Chisnall’s run followed a semi-final appearance on Saturday and was also his second PDC ProTour final in Barnsley as his impressive debut year in the PDC continues.

The St Helens ace whitewashed Michael Rosenauer in his opening game, and then defeated Mervyn King, Co Stompe, picked up a 6-0 win over Simon Whitlock and also overcame Wayne Jones.

In the semi-finals, he punished three missed match darts in the deciding leg against Mark Hylton to win through to the decider, with the £5,000 prize money for the weekend guaranteeing his qualifying place in next month’s World Matchplay.

Hylton had edged out Steve Beaton 6-5 in the quarter-finals as he reached the last four for the second time in a month, having impressed with whitewashes of Michael van Gerwen and Ronnie Baxter during the event.

Wade followed up last week’s victory in the Speedy Hire UK Open with his best PDC ProTour run of the year as he won through to the semis, defeating three-time World Champion John Part and rising star Shaun Griffiths along the way.

Part, a two-time Players Championship winner already this year, was amongst the quarter-finalists, alongside Gary Anderson, Beaton and Jones.

The day also included a nine-dart finish from Simon Whitlock, who took out a perfect leg in his third round defeat of Devon Petersen, hitting 180, 177 and finishing 144 with two treble 18s and double 18 to claim a £2,800 bonus.

World Champion Adrian Lewis allowed a 5-1 lead to slip as he was defeated 6-5 in the second round by Dave Smith, while Saturday’s Eddie Cox Memorial Players Championship winner Paul Nicholson lost 6-2 to Beaton in the last 32.

Sunday’s event was named in memory of Bobby Bourn, the former PDC official who passed away in 2002.

Paul Nicholson wins PDC Eddie Cox Memorial Darts Barnsley 11th June 2011

Nicholson’s Players Championship Treble

11 Jun 2011

PAUL NICHOLSON won his third PDC ProTour event of the year with victory over Steve Brown in the final of Saturday’s Eddie Cox Memorial Players Championship at the Barnsley Metrodome.

Paul Nicholson

Nicholson followed up his pair victories in Crawley earlier this year with a fine display to scoop the £6,000 first prize in Barnsley.

Having defeated Gary Anderson and Phil Taylor in reaching the quarter-finals of the Speedy Hire UK Open last week, he continued that form to sweep through the 111-player field.

Newcastle-born Nicholson overcame Louis Blundell, Peter Wright and Mark Webster in his opening three matches before taking a fine 6-1 win against Mervyn King in the quarter-finals.

He then edged a dramatic semi-final with Dave Chisnall, who came from 3-1 down to level before the pair progressed to a deciding leg.

Chisnall, also a quarter-finalist in the UK Open, was first to a finish but missed five darts for victory before Nicholson clawed back and then took out 76 in two darts to reach the final.

Brown led 1-0 and 3-2 in the final, courtesy of a 118 finish in the fifth leg, but was punished for missing the bullseye for checkouts of 161 and 164 in the next two legs as Nicholson hit back-to-back 13-darters to move 4-3 up.

Brown also missed two darts at double top to break and level in the eighth leg as Nicholson edged to the brink of victory, and though Brown hit double four to keep the match alive it was Nicholson who sealed the win in the tenth leg on double ten.

Nicholson dedicated the victory to Wes Newton, partner Stacy and newborn baby Fraser Newton, who was born on Friday and led to last week’s UK Open finalist withdrawing from Saturday’s event.

“Wes was one of the first people to phone me after the win to congratulate me, which means a lot after the distractions of Fraser’s birth yesterday,” said Nicholson.

“Wes has been an inspiration with his form over the last year and I’m hoping to follow him into the world’s top ten.

“After last Sunday I was obviously very tired and it had been a very challenging weekend at the UK Open, but I rehabilitated myself over the first couple of days of the week and came into this weekend with a little bit of energy.

“I don’t think I deserved to win every game today and I had a couple scraps, but came through it with wins and I’m really chuffed with myself.

“A lot of people say that when you start winning it’s a good habit to get into, and that’s what I’ve tried to do this year. When you get into some bad form it’s hard to get out of it, but this year has been a dream come true.

“I’ve worked really hard over Christmas and come back fighting. Every single game I’m in, whether I’m behind or in front, I’m still fighting to keep winning.

“I really want to get into the top ten and I feel that I let myself down after winning the Players Championship Finals lasy January, but this year I’m coming true on the floor.

“I’m starting to prove what I’m made of and I’m really happy with myself.”

Brown had won his place in the final in dramatic fashion in another tight semi-final, as he edged out Justin Pipe 6-5.

Pipe had trailed 3-0 and 4-1 before hitting back to force a decider with a 13-darter in leg ten, and opened the last leg with scores of 180, 100 and 140.

With Brown on 156, Pipe opted against throwing for the bull when on 81, hitting 18 to leave 32, but the Bristol ace powered home his huge finish to win through to the final.

That semi-final was one of four successive 6-5 wins for Brown, who also won in a decider against Michael Barnard, Terry Jenkins and Brian Woods, and had been preceded by a 6-4 win over Shaun Griffiths and a 6-1 defeat of Kevin Dowling in round one.

Pipe’s run to the semis saw him lose for the sixth time at that stage as he was cruelly denied a place in his first PDC ProTour final, but he picked up £2,000 for his day’s work.

Chisnall also claimed £2,000 and joins Pipe and Brown in strengthening their claims for a qualifying place in next month’s World Matchplay.

St Helens’ Chisnall twice missed double 12 for a nine-dart finish during the event, and also defeated three-time World Champion John Part,

In-form Robert Thornton reached the quarter-finals alongside King, Part and Brian Woods, who appeared in the last eight for the first time since winning a PDC ProTour Card in January.

The Players Championship was named in memory of the late PDC official Eddie Cox, who passed away in December 2008, with Sunday’s event being played in memory of another former PDC Players’ Marshal, Bobby Bourn.

Nicholson added: “Eddie was a fellow Geordie and I know he’s missed by so many people within darts, so it’s a big honour for me to win the event named in his memory.”

Paul Nicholson completes amazing comeback in final leg, with Dave Chisnall missing double eight for a 124 finish (with Nicholson on 273) before missing four further match darts, and Nicholson returns to finish 76 in two darts.
There was more drama in the deciding leg of the other semi-final, when Justin Pipe hit scores of 180, 100 and 140 in the deciding leg after coming from 3-0 down against Steve Brown. With Brown on 156, Pipe opted against throwing at the bullseye and instead left 32, but Brown checked out 156 for victory and his second ProTour final in Barnsley of the year.

Final – Leg-by-leg

Reece Robinson wins Barnsley PDC Youth Tour event 11th June 2011

Robinson Storms To Maiden Win

11 Jun 2011

REECE ROBINSON defeated Shaun Griffiths 4-0 to win the final of the ninth PDC Unicorn Youth Tour event, held at the Barnsley Metrodome on Saturday.

Hull’s Robinson, 19, followed up an impressive run to the last 32 of the Speedy Hire UK Open last weekend by picking up his first professional title, claiming £600 as he denied Griffiths a second win of the year on the PDC Unicorn Youth Tour.

Robinson also defeated another former winner, Paul Barham, as well as Jonathan Mulley, Christopher Lawrence and Adam Smith-Neale to reach the final.

After edging the opening leg on double three, Robinson took out 76 to win the second and double 13 for the third, after Griffiths missed a single 19 which would have left him the bullseye.

Robinson then secured a whitewash win by finishing 100 in two darts to take the fourth leg.

“It means a huge amount to me to win this,” said Robinson. “There are a lot of good players in these events and I’ve not won past the quarter-finals before, so I’m very happy.

“Shaun’s beaten me before in a quarter-final before, beating me 3-0 with legs of 14, 14 and ten darts and I knew I had to do something similar to beat him and 4-0 is great.

Reece Robinson - Speedy Hire UK Open (Lawrence Lustig, PDC)“After last week in Bolton I said to myself that I must be among the favourites, and I just tried to play the same standard of darts.

“It’s been a year where I’ve learned a lot. I had a suspension earlier on but I’ve got the silly stuff out of the way now and in a way it’s helped me along because I’ve wanted to practice harder and play a lot better.”

Griffiths edged out two-time event winner Michael van Gerwen 4-3 in the semis, with the Dutchman missing a dart at the bull for victory in the deciding leg before the Manchester-based youngster finished 69 in two darts.

Van Gerwen’s run to the last four saw him overcome former winner Adam Hunt and UK Open Qualifier winner Michael Smith on the day.

Smith-Neale’s run to the semi-finals was his best of the year, eclipsing three previous quarter-final appearances.

The next PDC Unicorn Youth Tour event will be held at the Van Der Valk Hotel in Nuland next Saturday, following the conclusion of the Players Championship. Entry can still be made by calling the PDC Head Office on 08712 501 180, or for non-UK players by visiting www.pdc-europe.net.
