Home Win For Caven

19 Feb 2011

JAMIE CAVEN defeated World Champion Adrian Lewis 6-2 in the final of Saturday’s Players Championship to claim the £6,000 prize on home soil in Derby.

The world number 18 picked up his first ranking title in England, and the fifth win of his career, in style by hitting a 170 finish during his win over high-flying Lewis.

Lewis had taken the first leg of the final, but Caven included checkouts of 85 on the bullseye and 75 in taking the next three to lead 3-1.

He also missed one dart at the bull in the fifth as Lewis hit back, but a 107 finish was followed by a brilliant 170 checkout – in reply to a 180 from his opponent earlier in the leg – as he moved 5-2 up, before taking out 54 for victory.

Caven had earlier defeated Ronnie Baxter by the same scoreline in the semi-finals, and overcame PDC newcomer Dave Chisnall 6-3 in the quarter-finals.

He had also defeated Colin Monk, Peter Wright, Dennis Smith and Steve Evans on the day, as he pocketed a valuable £6,000 – which boosts his chances of qualifying for the World Matchplay and World Grand Prix this year through the Players Championship Order of Merit if he fails to break into the world’s top 16.

“It’s a huge win for me,” said Caven afterwards. “I felt good coming into the event and knew it would be amazing to win in my home town, but to defeat the current World Champion in the final makes it extra special.

“I played well throughout the day and held it together when I needed to under pressure. Dave Chisnall played really well against me, and I was 2-1 down against Ronnie Baxter in the semis and won 6-2 so I showed plenty of fight.

“The 170 in the final was a big shot and it probably won me the game because Adrian was waiting on a finish to get back to 4-3 and instead I went 5-2 up.”

He added: “I’m delighted to have won my fifth title in just four years as a professional, and especially in such a strong field of players.

“The result will move me closer to the top 16 but it’s important too in terms of qualifying for the other majors this year, and it’s a big relief to have the £6,000 on the Players Championship Order of Merit at this stage.”

Lewis’ run to the final included battling wins over Wes Newton, Paul Nicholson and Terry Jenkins in the latter stages, after he had earlier defeated Brendan Dolan, Steve Hine and Prakash Jiwa.

Baxter’s semi-final appearance followed up his victory in a Players Championship in Germany three weeks ago, while Newton also claimed £2,000 in his bid to push for a place in the world’s top ten.

Gibraltar’s Dyson Parody enjoyed his best-ever run on the PDC ProTour, overcoming Gary Welding, Richie Burnett, Mark Jones and John Henderson to reach the last eight, where he went down to Newton.

Henderson had earlier hit a nine-dart finish in the second leg of a victory over Andy Hamilton, earning the Scot an £800 bonus in only his third Players Championship event.

Canada’s three-time World Champion John Part had also come close to hitting a perfect leg during his first round win over Ireland’s John O’Shea, but missed double 12 for the achievement.

Play continues on Sunday with a second £35,000 Players Championship event at the Moorways Centre in Derby.

888.com Premier League – Night Two

17 Feb 2011

PHIL TAYLOR returned to top form with a brilliant 8-5 win over Mark Webster in one of the highest-quality nights in the history of the 888.com Premier League Darts at Nottingham’s Capital FM Arena on Thursday.

Taylor had looked a shadow of the player who romped to last year’s Premier League title when he slumped to an 8-2 defeat against Adrian Lewis on the opening night at London’s O2 Arena last week.

But he produced a fine display of power scoring and clinical finishing to make the ideal response with an 8-5 win over Mark Webster, who hit finishes of 170 and 160 but could not match the world number one.

“I hit rock bottom last week but I feel on top of the world now,” admitted Taylor afterwards. “I had a couple of days off to get my head right and now I’m going to get better each week.”Gary Anderson

Webster’s two big finishes were amongst 14 ton-plus checkouts in a top quality night in Nottingham.

Raymond van Barneveld hit four of his own in an 8-3 win over Simon Whitlock, taking out 160, 156 and 116 before sealing victory with a 141 checkout.

“I’ve been working hard on my finishing and it paid off tonight,” said van Barneveld. “I know what I can do and for the last two years I’ve only done it on the practice board and not on stage regularly, but I’m pleased with this win.”

Gary Anderson remains the only unbeaten player following two weeks after his 8-4 win over Terry Jenkins, which he sealed with a 121 finish.

“I’m really pleased to have won again,” said Anderson, who averaged 102 on the night. “I’m still a bit nervous in front of the big crowds but I’m settling down and enjoying the Premier League.”

2009 champion James Wade was the night’s other winner, as he secured an 8-6 win over Adrian Lewis with a brilliant 136 checkout, after the World Champion had missed two darts to snatch a draw in a dramatic deciding leg.

RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD 8-3 SIMON WHITLOCK
RAYMOND VAN BARNEVELD produced a sensational display of finishing to secure his first 888.com Premier League Darts victory of the season, defeating Simon Whitlock 8-3 in Nottingham.

The Dutchman rolled back the years with a vintage performance as he hit four ton-plus checkouts to bounce back in style from an 8-6 loss to Terry Jenkins in week one.

Whitlock had hit eight finishes from nine attempts in defeating van Barneveld last season, and was on the receiving end of the five-time World Champion’s brilliance on this occasion.

The game had begun slowly, with van Barneveld missing doubles in the opening two legs but landing double 12 to break and double two in the second.

Whitlock fired in a brilliant 140 to get off the mark, but saw van Barneveld reply with a 180 in an 11-dart leg to lead 3-1.

Double four gave Whitlock the fifth, but van Barneveld produced killer blows with finishes of 116 and 160 either side of the break in moving 5-2 up.

The pair traded double top finishes in the next two legs to leave van Barneveld 6-3 up, but Whitlock hit his third 180 of the game in the tenth to leave a finish.

However, he would not get a shot at the 121 as van Barneveld powered home a 156 checkout, and the scenario was repeated in the next when, with Whitlock waiting on 70 after another maximum the Dutchman finished 141 to take victory.

“I loved that,” said van Barneveld, who previously hit five ton-plus finishes in the 2006 Premier League Darts in a win over Wayne Mardle.

“I know what I can do and for the last two years I’ve only done it on the practice board and not on stage regularly.

“Everyone knows I can do it and I’m very pleased with this win. I’ve been sloppy at times but I’m more consistent at the moment and it’s giving me confidence.

“I’ve tried different types of flights and took the decision to go back to my old, kite-shaped flights, and I’ve been working hard on my finishing and it paid off tonight.”

Whitlock admitted: “His finishing was brilliant and I’ve no complaints with that. I had left myself a finish a few times when he took out his big shots and it’s great to see him playing so well.”

JAMES WADE 8-6 ADRIAN LEWIS
JAMES WADE took out a brilliant 136 finish to win a deciding leg against Adrian Lewis and gain his first 888.com Premier League Darts victory of the season.

Wade, the 2009 Premier League Darts champion, had been disappointing with an 8-3 loss to Mark Webster on the opening week at The O2, but hit six 180s and three ton-plus finishes in seeing off the World Champion.

Lewis had trailed 7-4 before hitting back to force a deciding leg, but crucially missed two match darts at double 18 before Wade produced his showpiece winner.

The opening two legs went with the throw before Lewis missed the bull for a 122 finish in the next, with Wade posting double ten to edge 2-1 up.

The duo then shared six 180s in the next three legs in a brilliant run, with Lewis taking out checkouts of 121 and 100 for 12-darters and Wade finishing a 14-darter to leave the game tied at three-all.

Wade won the seventh with a 13-darter and then took the game’s first break with a 102 finish, punishing six misses from Lewis, to lead 5-3.

The left-hander also took the next, hitting a 180 and double 17, to move two legs before Lewis won the tenth on double ten to pull back to 6-4.

A sensational 141 checkout from Wade ensured he would take at least his first point of the season, and he was waiting on a finish in the next two as Lewis kept the match alive with finishes of double 18 and a tricky double 16.

He hit three ton-plus scores to be first to a finish in the decider, but missed two darts at double 18 for a 96 finish to give Wade a look at 136, and he piled in two treble 20s and double eight to grab the win and both points.

“I’m really pleased with that, because last week I felt embarrassed and like I didn’t belong in the Premier League, and deep down I know I do belong here,” said Wade.

“I’ve practised hard since and showed that when I believe in myself I can play so well. I wanted to prove something tonight and I need to come back next week – and the week after – with the same attitude, which will make me a better player.”

Lewis said: “I showed a lot of character to come back and I put him under pressure, but the 136 was a fantastic shot. He was great and took out a few great finishes.

“I’ll be back next week and I’m in this tournament to win it. It’s a long 14 weeks and this is only the first two weeks.”

PHIL TAYLOR 8-5 MARK WEBSTER
PHIL TAYLOR returned to top form with a brilliant 8-5 win over Mark Webster as the 888.com Premier League Darts visited Nottingham’s Capital FM Arena on Thursday.

Taylor looked a shadow of the player who romped to last year’s Premier League title when he slumped to an 8-2 defeat against Adrian Lewis on the opening night at London’s O2 Arena last week.

However, he produced a fine display of power scoring and clinical finishing to make the ideal response, and send a chilling message to his Premier League rivals.

Webster played his part with finishes of 170 and 160, but could only applaud a fine Taylor performance as the world number one avenged his recent World Championship quarter-final defeat to the Welshman.

Taylor set his stall out early on, hitting double 16 for the opening leg and five perfect darts in taking the second against the throw, despite Webster hitting a 180 in reply.

Taylor also took the third in 14 darts to lead 3-0, and hit two 180s in the fourth only to see Webster take out a superb 170 checkout, earning himself his first leg of the game and a £1,000 bonus as the night’s highest finish.

Taylor roared back with legs of 12 and 11 darts in taking two of the next three in leading 5-2, with Webster following up a 13-darter of his own with a stunning 160 checkout – after his opponent had missed the bull for a 161 finish.

The next two were also shared before double five saw Taylor moved 7-4 up, and the five-time Premier League winner celebrated in style as he secured at least a point.

Double six saw Webster win a fifth leg, but Taylor was not to be denied as he piled in a seventh maximum and double 16 to ensure victory.

“I hit rock bottom last week but I feel on top of the world now,” admitted Taylor afterwards. “I had a couple of days off to get my head right and now I’m going to get better each week.

“I fought hard for the win tonight and Mark played really well to push me. He took out a couple of brilliant finishes and they inspire you to hit back.”

Match Stats

GARY ANDERSON 8-4 TERRY JENKINS
GARY ANDERSON continued seamless introduction to the 888.com Premier League Darts with an 8-4 victory over Terry Jenkins at Nottingham’s Capital FM Arena.

The Scot followed up his opening night win against Simon Whitlock with another fine display, averaging over 102 in sweeping past Jenkins.

Much of the damage was done early on with three breaks of throw as Anderson took a 4-1 lead, with a 13-dart finish from Jenkins in the second leg bettered by an 11-darter from the World Championship finalist.

Jenkins took out 120 in the sixth and reduced the gap to 4-3 when Anderson missed three darts to win the seventh, with a 177 from the Ledbury ace setting up double 19.

Anderson, though, ended the comeback on double eight and hit a 180 in the next before a 13-dart leg saw him take a 7-3 advantage.

Jenkins replied on double 15 to raise hopes of matching last week’s comeback against Raymond van Barneveld, but Anderson was swift to wrap up the win with a 12-dart finish, completed with a 121 bullseye checkout.

“I’m really pleased to have won again,” said Anderson. “We both missed a few doubles at times and it could have been different if Terry hadn’t missed some crucial doubles.

“I’m still a bit nervous in front of the big crowds but I’m settling down and enjoying the Premier League. I’m aiming to hit a 120-plus average during the Premier League at some point and I think it’s possible – I’ve just got to do it.”

PDC Pro Darts Tour 2011 Derby 20th Feb – Part turns back the clock

Superb Part Whitewashes Walsh

20 Feb 2011

JOHN PART won his first Players Championship since 2007 with a brilliant whitewash win against Mark Walsh in Derby on Sunday.

The Canadian, who has drifted out to 32nd in the PDC Order of Merit over the past two years, began his fightback to move back up the rankings with a fine showing at the Moorways Centre.

Having missed double 12 for a nine-dart finish during Saturday’s Players Championship, Part continued the excellent form throughout Sunday’s £35,000 event.

Photo Lawrence Lustig

After overcoming Darren Johnson, Mark Dudbridge and Denis Ovens in the early rounds, he whitewashed Richie Burnett in the last 16 and then defeated in-form pair Jamie Caven and Wes Newton to reach his first PDC ProTour final since last April.

That appearance, in a UK Open Qualifier, had seen him lose 6-3 to Walsh but the three-time World Champion made amends with a superb performance, averaging 104.86 in a whitewash of the world number nine.

Part hit a 180 in taking the opening leg and added a second maximum in a 12-darter to break Walsh’s throw, before hitting finishes of 14 and 13 darts to lead 4-0.

Walsh missed two darts to get off the mark in the fifth, as Part followed up another maximum with double 18 to lead 5-0, before punishing three misses at double 12 from his opponent to seal the win on double 15.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Part. “It wasn’t too much much about revenge against Mark for the defeat in the final last year but it was in my mind that the week after that he also beat me in Derby 6-5, which kindof rubbed my nose in the dirt!

“It does feel good but it’s nothing serious, I’m more happy just to have beaten him and won because I was really steady all day.

“Maybe I got a bit lucky against Denis Ovens because I was 5-2 down and not scoring too well compared to my other games but I hung in there and won it, and I followed through to get to the final.”

He added: “I always feel pressure coming into an event but once I got past the first round I didn’t feel any pressure when I got the run going,

“The standard’s so high now but I’ve got nothing to lose. I’ve been there and done it, but am not up there at the moment, so nobody’s expecting me to win and I can enjoy it and play well.”

Walsh was denied a PDC ProTour victory in Derby for the third successive year by the defeat, but had shown his class with a narrow 6-5 semi-final win over Mervyn King – who missed three match darts in a tight encounter.

Walsh also edged out Andy Smith and Nick Fullwell 6-5 in the event, as well as defeating Northern Ireland’s Brendan Dolan 6-1 in the quarter-finals.

Fleetwood’s in-form Wes Newton reached his second semi-final of the weekend, while St Helens’ Dave Chisnall continued his introduction to the PDC circuit with back-to-back quarter-finals in Derby.

Chisnall, who also hit a nine-darter in German recently, had knocked out world number three James Wade 6-5 and defeated Ronnie Baxter before losing out to Newton.

Coventry’s Scott Rand reached his first quarter-final on the PDC ProTour, including Steve Farmer, Peter Wright and Sweden’s Magnus Caris amongst his victims before losing to King.

Saturday’s Players Championship winner Jamie Caven also reached the last eight before going down to Part, while Northern Ireland’s Michael Mansell was amongst the last 16.

World Champion Adrian Lewis withdrew through illness, while Phil Taylor had previously withdrawn from the weekend’s events to leave a field of 125 players.

Reece Robinson also missed out after receiving a one-month ban following the first PDC Unicorn Youth Tour event on Saturday night, in line with the DRA instruction about dangerous and reckless throwing of darts.

PDC Youth Tour Derby 19th Feb 2011 – Hunt Wins

Hunt Wins Maiden Youth Title

19 Feb 2011

ADAM HUNT won the inaugural PDC Unicorn Youth Tour event, defeating Josh Jones 4-2 in the final at Derby’s Moorways Leisure Centre.

Chester-le-Street’s Hunt, 18, picked up the £600 first prize after winning through a 120-player field in the first of 15 events to be held this year for players aged from 14-21.

Photo Lawrence Lustig

The youngster had competed earlier on Saturday in the Players Championship in Derby, overcoming experienced professional Andy Smith 6-5 in the first round before losing out to Chris Aubrey.

However, he fared even better in the PDC Unicorn Youth Tour event, whitewashing Sean White and Marc Evans before then defeating Josh McCarthy 3-1 and Jamie Green 3-2 to reach the last eight.

He then overcame Birmingham’s Matt Gallett 3-0 in the quarter-finals and defeated Kettering’s Ricky Evans 4-1 in the semis.

Hunt shared the first four legs of the final with Jones, but punished missed doubles from the 20-year-old from Rugby in the next two to secure victory.

Jones, who turns 21 on Sunday, was denied the perfect birthday present but still pocketed £400 for reaching the final.

He had defeated Tunstall’s Jamie Landon 4-1 in the semi-finals, whitewashed Sunbury-on-Thames’ Brandon Monk in the quarters and also knocked out Chris Aubrey and Dutch talent Jimmy Hendriks in the event.

Adam Smith-Neale, who won a PDC ProTour Card this year and has already competed three times on the professional circuit, reached the last eight before losing to Landon, while Newbury’s Jonathan Mulley was the other quarter-finalist.

PDC Unicorn Under-21 World Champion Arron Monk lost in the last 32 to Darren Whittingham, while Co Stompe Jnr – the son of the Dutch ace – was defeated in round one by Tom Murray.

The second PDC Unicorn Youth Tour event will be held at the Barnsley Metrodome next Saturday, with 110 players already entered for the £2,000 tournament.

PDC Darts Youth tour off to a flying start in Derby with 128 entries

The first tournament on the PDC Unicorn Youth Tour will feature a full field of 128 players.

The PDC will hold 15 separate events for players aged 14-21 this year, which will be followed by the World Youth Championship.

The first of the 15 events, each worth £2,000, will be played at the Moorways Centre in Derby on Satuday February 19, beginning at 5pm.

In line with UK-based Players Championships, the tournaments will feature a maximum of 128 players – with that total already reached for the Derby event.

Almost 100 players have already entered the second tournament, which will be held at the Barnsley Metrodome on Saturday February 26.

“This is tremendous news and we’re delighted to have seen such a response from young players from both the UK and Europe since announcing the PDC Unicorn Youth Tour last month,” said PDC Director Rod Harrington.

“These youngsters will be the future of our sport, and it will be great to see so many of them taking this first step on the professional ladder this year.”

Entry to the event in Barnsley will cost £25 per player. Players must call the PDC Head Office on 08712 501 180 to make their entry and receive an entry number to confirm their entry, with payment to be made in person when registering at the event before 4pm on that respective day.

Entry will be open from 9am-5pm on Monday-Friday, and entries for the Barnsley event will close at 5pm on Friday February 25 or when the field of 128 is reached.

Entry information for other events will be announced in due course.

All games will be played under DRA rules. Players must be aged 14 or above, and 21 and under on January 3 2011 to be eligible to play in the PDC Unicorn Youth Tour events.

Webster Expects Taylor Backlash

16 Feb 2011

MARK WEBSTER is expecting a backlash from Phil Taylor when they meet in the 888.com Premier League Darts at Nottingham’s Capital FM Arena on Thursday.

Webster, 27, had ended Taylor’s bid for a 16th World Championship title on New Year’s Day, picking up a quarter-final victory over the Stoke legend at Alexandra Palace.

Thursday’s Premier League contest will be their first game since, with Webster anticipating Taylor to be targeting revenge in Nottingham..

“It wasn’t too long ago and I’m sure he hasn’t forgotten, so I’m expecting some sort of a backlash,” said Webster, who won on his Premier League debut against James Wade last week.

“To defeat him in a World Championship is something to stick on my CV but it didn’t win me the tournament.

“I beat Phil and then 24 hours later I got beaten in the semis. I’d have sooner been in the other half of the draw and won the World Championship.

“It’s not like the hard work was wasted because it helped to get me a spot in the Premier League, but my objective was to win the whole event and I didn’t.

“But hopefully I can keep playing like I have been and I can get another result against Phil on Thursday.”

The Welshman won the Lakeside Championship in 2008 before joining the PDC, and has reached two World Championship semi-finals since in his bid to add further major honours.

Mark Webster - 888.com Premier League Darts (Lawrence Lustig, PDC)However, he believes that no player can match the domination which Taylor has enjoyed on the darts circuit since claiming his first title in 1990.

“Nobody will ever get near his record,” added Webster. “Someone might win about ten majors on TV but he’s won something like 70 of them, so he’s the benchmark and we’d all like to be as successful as him.

“I’ve probably got 25 years on him yet but it would be a big ask to get anywhere near him!”

Taylor suffered his heaviest ever Premier League defeat when he went down 8-2 to World Champion Adrian Lewis at The O2 last Thursday.

Webster, though, added: “I don’t read too much into that because you don’t lose your quality overnight.

“People say class is permanent and form is temporary, and I think Phil will be fine – just hopefully not on Thursday!”

Whilst Taylor endured a nightmare at The O2, Webster’s debut could hardly have gone better as he saw off 2009 champion Wade 8-3, taking the last five legs without reply.

“It’s every player’s ambition to be involved in the Premier League and I felt really good,” he said.

“I thought I’d win if I am being honest, because James hasn’t been in great form, but the main objective was to get a point on the board, so to get both points was great for me.

“Hitting a 180 in the first three darts settled me down and I was quite pleased to get to the break level at three-all because James was starting to hit form, and it deserted him a little in the second half.

“The crowd were good to me too and I enjoyed the atmosphere. I’m expecting more from the crowd this week, especially because I’m playing Phil, and I’m looking forward to it.”

A number of tickets remain on sale for Thursday’s 888.com Premier League Darts, priced at £20 plus booking fee and available via 08444 124 624 or www.capitalfmarena.com.

The Unicorn PDC Premier League Precition League 2011!

Image

The Unicorn Premier League Precition League 2011!

The true test of predicting stamina!

15 weeks of darts action.

Slightly different predicting rules to last year, but first of all, here are the prizes.

Weekly Winners

The 14 weekly winners will each win a set of darts of their choosing from the Unicorn catalogue (click here) :DDDD: :DDDD:

IN ADDITION, a random entry each week will also win a set of their own choosing!! :DDDD: :DDDD:

Image

Overall Winner

The overall winner after the Finals Night will also win a set of darts of their choosing from the Unicorn catalogue - (click here), and in addition they will also pick up a Unicorn Eclipse Pro dartboard – the true choice of the professional :DDDD: :DDDD:

Image

So with Weekly prizes on offer, there is still an incentive to join in after a few weeks, and even if you miss a week, you still could win a prize. And even if your predictions are rubbish, you might be the lucky winner in the random draw!
:DDDD: :DDDD:
The Rules

Every week I shall start a thread where you make your predictions. This thread will have all the tables and standings.

- Predict the scores of the 4 matches. First to 8, although draws are possible at 7-7. FIVE POINTS if you predict the correct winner and scoreline, or TWO POINTS if you just predict the correct winner with incorrect scoreline. All correctly predicted draws will give you 5 points. Just to clarify the highest score for each match is 5, and not 7
- I also would like to know who you think will get the HIGHEST AVERAGE, LOWEST AVERAGE and the HIGHEST CHECKOUT of the night. Just the name will do, not what you think the highest average will be! TWO POINTS for each of the averages, ONE POINT for the highest checkout.
- This gives a total of 25 points to be won each night. Finals Night will score DOUBLE the above.

With each entry, I will also ask you to provide a tiebreak of how many 180s you think will be hit on the night, as well as the choice of darts you want if you win the prize.

Good luck!
